S.550 A bill to preserve existing judgeships on the Superior Court of the District of Columbia.

The bill increases the number of associate judges on the Superior Court of the District of Columbia from 58 to 61.

Previous law limited the number of judges. Positions were needed in the Family Courts but the law prohibited filling them. This bill allows for those judgeships to be filled.

Congress oversees the DC courts and the Federal government finances them.

Sponsor:  Senator Daniel Akaka (D-HI)

Vote: Passed the Senate by Unanimous Consent February 4, 2008. Passed House by voice vote April 1, 2008

Cost to the taxpayers: Funds are already appropriated.
